Cite While You Write Installation Problems
EndNote commands are available for Microsoft Word 2016, 2019, 2021 or Office 365. EndNote commands appear in Word on an EndNote 2025 tab.
If you do not see these commands, Word support was not correctly installed. If you installed Microsoft Word after installing EndNote 2025, you should either reinstall EndNote or use the Customizer to install the Cite While You Write files. Try these three ways to install Cite While You Write (after each attempt, start EndNote and then Word to check for an EndNote 2025 tab in Word).
Use the Customizer
- Make sure no applications are running—including virus protection software and any Microsoft Office applications.
- Start the EndNote program.
- From the EndNote 2025 menu, select Customizer.
- On the Component Selection dialog, select the components you want to install (or keep installed) and click Next. These should include the Cite While You Write component.
- Continue through the installation.
Install the Cite While You Write Files Manually
If you have a custom startup folder for Word, the Customizer may be unable to install the Cite While You Write files to that custom folder. If this is the case, try installing the files manually as described below.
Determining the Microsoft Word Startup Folder
Word normally uses a default startup folder. For example, for a local installation of Office 365, the location would be—
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office 365/User Content/Startup/Word
However, Word’s startup folder location could have been changed. If you are unsure which startup location is being used, or to change the startup location, use these instructions.
To determine the path of Word’s Startup Folder:
- Start Microsoft Word.
- From the Word menu, select Preferences.
- Select File Locations and look at the Startup line to see the path for the designated startup folder.
- If the Startup line is blank, it should be set to the default location. If you would like to change the startup folder location, select the Startup line, click Modify, select the desired folder, and save your changes. We recommend using the default folder location.
- Quit Word. This step is important!
Copy the Cite While You Write Bundle to the Startup Folder
You need to copy files as described below.
To install support for Word 2016 (version 16.xx) or 2019, or for Office 365:
- Navigate to the //Applications/EndNote 2025/Cite While You Write folder.
- Select EndNote CWYW Word 16.bundle, then type ⌘+C to copy it to the Clipboard.
- Navigate to the Word startup folder and paste the EndNote CWYW Word 16.bundle there.
To install support for Word 2016 (version 15.xx):
- Navigate to the //Applications/EndNote 2025/Cite While You Write folder.
- Select EndNote CWYW Word 16.bundle, then type ⌘+C to copy it to the Clipboard.
- Navigate to the Word startup folder and paste the EndNote CWYW Word 16.bundle there.
When word processor support is correctly installed, you will see an EndNote 2025 tab in Word.
