Custom Installations/Adding Content Files

First, install the full EndNote program as described in A Typical Installation. Next, select Customizer from the EndNote 2025 menu.

Installing with the EndNote Customizer

You can use the EndNote Customizer to install, reinstall, or remove specific components after the EndNote program has already been installed. The Customizer gives you full access to all available content files (connection files, import filters, and output stylestyles). See The Customizer for more detailed information.

  • Cite While You Write: If you install Microsoft Word after installing EndNote, you will need to install the Cite While You Write files. Close Word and Outlook before installing the files.
  • Spotlight Indexing: This option installs support for Spotlight indexing. See for information about enabling Spotlight searching.
  • Connection Files, Import Filters, and Output Styles: For performance speed, EndNote initially installs only the most popular of these files. Use the Customizer to install additional groups of content files or remove those you don't need.

To do a custom installation:

  1. Make sure no applications are running—including virus protection software and Microsoft Word.
  2. Start the EndNote program.
  3. From the EndNote menu, select Customizer.
  4. On the Component Selection dialog, select the components you want to install, or keep installed. If a component is unmarked, it will be removed.

You can expand the lists of Connections, Import Filters, and Output Styles to limit your selection to specific groups of files.  Any components that are not selected will be removed. The standard popular styles, filters, and connection files will remain.
  5. Click Next.
Adding Content Files

The EndNote team has developed thousands of content files (output styles, filters, and connection files). Because installing all of these files can slow performance, a typical EndNote installation includes only the most popular of each type of file.

For information specifically about installing additional content files after EndNote is installed, see these topics:

Removing Extraneous Files

If you want to free up disk space, or want to limit the options available, you can use the Finder to delete individual example files, styles, connection files, filters, term lists, and spell check dictionaries. The Customizer can reinstall these files, if needed.
